Pachter: Nintendo 3DS teknik ”kommer att kopieras”

Michael Pachter, analytiker hos Wedbush Morgan, har sagt att 3D-tekniken i den nyligen tillkännagivna Nintendo 3DS kommer att ”imiteras” av företag som Apple för deras iPhone såvida Nintendo 3DS inte erbjuder ett “real breakthrough in gameplay.”

“What’s interesting to me is that Nintendo is so bold”, sade Pachter. ”It seems that if 3D on portable devices was easy, Apple would have beat them to it.”

“If they truly pioneer a technology, my guess is that Apple will mimic the technology. Without a real breakthrough in gameplay (as happened with the DS), I’m not sure that this device will do much more than serve as a replacement for current DS owners.”

Nintendo 3DS tillkännagavs tidigare den här morgonen, och kommer enligt Nintendo att visas upp på E3-mässan i juni och släppas någon gång innan maj 2011.

Pachter: Nintendo Wii-försäljningen i februari var ”well below our expectations”

När NPD släpptes siffrorna över hårdvaruförsäljningen i USA under februari månad visade de att Xbox 360, för första gången på flera år, hade passerat Nintendo Wii i konsolförsäljning. Nintendo Wii såldes i 397 000 exemplar, 25 000 exemplar färre än Xbox 360. Jesse Divnich, analytiker hos EEDAR, menar dock att den låga försäljningen inte innebär att Nintendo Wii:s stjärna har börjat dala.

“Our extensive retail channel checks have all indicated that, in fact, the Nintendo Wii is in short supply. We believe February numbers reflect entirely on the Wii being supply constrained and has little to do with declining demand of the product,” sade Divnich.

Michael Pachter, analytiker hos Wedbush Morgan, är inte fullt lika optimistisk.

“Nintendo’s overall performance was well below our expectations, with software down over 30% and Wii hardware units down almost 50%. Nintendo had warned us that February would be a difficult month due to supply constraints, but we believe that the problem runs deeper than that, as sales of staple titles like Wii Fit with Balance Board and Wii Play were well below historical levels,” förklarade han.

Det här hade inte varit något problem om Nintendo hade haft stora titlar på väg. Michael Pachter tror dock inte att de kommande spelen till Nintendos konsol är tillräckliga för att se till att försäljningen av Nintendo Wii får upp farten igen.

“There is clearly strong demand for the PS3 at the moment due in part to its list of exclusives in early 2010 (Heavy Rain, God of War III, MLB the Show 10, et al) and Blu-ray compatibility. Nintendo’s Wii, on the other hand, will not see any exciting exclusives until at least May (Super Mario Galaxy 2) and its software attach rate continues to decline,” sade han.

“This is exemplified by Wii Play, which sold barely 50,000 units in February, and Wii Fit, which also came in well below what we had expected. Titles such as these are finally starting to fade, suggesting that the new Wii purchaser is more casual than ever. Unlike the PS3, with multiple high-profile exclusives and the newly-announced Move Controller, and the Xbox 360, with Project Natal, the Wii lacks an important upcoming catalyst.”

Pachter: Nintendo DSi XL blir inte framgångsrik vid lanseringen

Michael Pachter, analytiker hos Wedbush Morgan, har sagt att han inte tror att den nya Nintendo DS-modellen XL kommer att bli framgångsrik vid lanseringen. Den främsta anledningen till det, enligt Pachter, är dess höga pris – bara hundralappen dyrare än ett Nintendo Wii och flera hundra kronor dyrare än den vanliga Nintendo DS.

“I think that the price point of all DS products are too high, and think that a price increase for the DSi XL is not going to sit well with consumers,” sade han. “The difference in price between the DS Lite and the XL is $60, and I’m not sure that bigger screens provide the value that Nintendo thinks.

“The difference between the DSi and the XL makes sense, but all three models are due for a cut, the DS to around $99, the DSi to $129, and the XL would then make more sense at $149. I don’t think it will be a success at launch, since it costs only $10 less than a Wii.”

Under gårdagens presskonferens i San Francisco avslöjade Nintendo att Nintendo DSi XL kommer att släppas med tre medföljande spel till ett rekommenderat pris motsvarande 190 dollar; runt 1 400 kronor. Släng på den svenska momsen så har du en uppfattning om hur mycket Nintendo DSi XL kommer att kosta när det släpps här i Sverige.

Pachter svarar på Reggie Fils-Aimes förnekande om Wii HD

I ett antal månader har en liten dispyt pågått mellan Michael Pachter, analytiker hos Wedbush Morgan tillika frekvent gäst hos GameTrailers talkshow Bonus Round, och Reggie Fils-Aime, chef för Nintendo of America, som du ser avbildad ovan. Michael Pachter har vid ett ett flertal tillfällen sagt att Nintendo jobbar på en Nintendo Wii-modell kapabel att visa högupplöst grafik, men i novemberavsnittet av GameTrailers TV sköt Reggie Fils-Aime ner hans påståenden med följande uttalande:

“You know, Michael continues to be the only one who believes that this is gonna happen. I don’t know how forcefully we can say there is no Wii HD.”

I det senaste avsnittet av Bonus Round vidhåller Michael Pachter att ett Wii HD eller ett Wii Plus är på väg och kommer att släppas under 2010.

“Reggie and I have a good cop, bad cop relationship. So I just keep saying yes, he keeps saying no… I know nothing, it makes rational business sense for them to introduce and soon, and I think they will introduce it and soon. 2010… Wii Plus… Yup [it is coming].”

Det är värt att nämna att Nintendo har en historia av att skjuta ned rykten bara för att bekräfta dem veckorna senare. Med det inte sagt att Michael Pachter faktiskt har rätt… Vi får helt enkelt vänta och se.

Michael Pachter om Wii HD: ”It’s coming”

I det senaste avsnittet av GameTrailers talkshow Bonus Round – se filmen i slutet av inlägget – säger analytikern Michael Pachter att hans favoritögonblick under 2009 var när Nintendo USA-chefen Reggie Fils-Aime sade att Pachter ”är den enda som fortfarande tror att ett Nintendo Wii HD är på väg.”

Trots att Reggie Fils-Aime vid upprepade tillfällen har konstaterat att inget som helst i den riktningen är under utveckling hos Nintendo vidhåller Pachter att vi kan vänta oss ett Wii HD någon gång i framtiden.

”It’s coming”, säger han i klippet nedan.

Reggie: ”Det finns inget Wii HD”

GameTrailers har publicerat en Nintendo-special i deras TV-serie GameTrailers TV, och i den säger Reggie Fils-Aime, chef för Nintendo of America, att de som hävdar att företaget jobbar på något vid namn Wii HD är ute och cyklar.

“Michael [Pachter] continues to be the only one that believes this is going to happen,” sade Reggoe till programledaren Geoff Keighley. “I don’t know how forcefully we can say that there is no Wii HD.”

Wedbush Morgans analytiker Michael Pachter har vid ett flertal tillfällen insisterat att Nintendo jobbar på en upphottad version av Nintendo Wii vid namn Wii HD.
